Supercheap Auto Racing Wrap-Ups with Chaz

Keep up to date with the latest wrap-ups after each event, as we get up and close with Chaz Mostert!

Ipswitch Raceway Wrap Up

What a weekend of racing in South East Queensland for the Supercheap Auto Racing team and Chaz Mostert. Hear what he had to say about the weekend race.

Saturday

Chaz Mostert started on the front row of the grid (in 2nd place) after a strong qualifying session at the Ipswich SuperSprint, sitting just 0.05s behind pole-sitter and teammate Chris Pither.

Although having a strong start to the race, Mostert was unable to hold off three charging bulls in the first stint before being one of the last cars to complete their compulsory pit stop.

Despite the lack of balance, Mostert’s late-race pace saw him challenge Mark Winterbottom in the final laps and ended up crossing the line in 5th!

Sunday

Chaz Mostert finished 3rd in his home race at the Ipswich SuperSprint after storming home with strong, late-race pace. Mostert finished where he started in race 17 where a late pit stop strategy enabled him to charge through the field in the final stint.

The pace displayed Chaz was a positive sign for our team who has struggled on the soft tyre in recent times.

Here’s what Chaz had to say:

“Strategy got us here on the podium in the end there. The car has been pretty good over about 20 laps but a bit after that it struggles. We’ve got a bit of homework to do when we go back to the workshop and try and work on a bit more tyre life on this soft tyre but overall I’m pretty happy to get back on the podium. This is my home race, I’ve had some good success here so to spray champagne with these guys is pretty special today.”

Townsville Wrap Up

A good weekend of racing up in Northern Queensland for the Townsville Castrol Edge 400. Hear what Chaz had to say to wrap-up the weekend racing.

Saturday

Chaz showed really good speed on Saturday morning and qualified 4th for race 14 after the two Red Bull cars (Whincup & Van Gisbergen) and James Courtney in the HRT Holden.

Race 14 was a 70 lap, 200km race that saw Chaz and Shane van Gisbergen in one of the “finest motor racing exchanges between 2 absolute pro’s” with them being locked in battle for over 15 laps. They both put on a great show for the camera, and both jumped out the car having enjoyed the battle.

Chaz said:

“I love racing Shane, he races hard, but he races pretty fair. A little bit of ‘rubbin’s racin’ so hopefully I can be on the other side of him next time and maybe in front of him,” Mostert said.

“I was just trying to conserve behind Shane – I had to have a crack. When you’re behind that thing … you’ve got to have a crack.”

Chaz managed to hold on to 4th place just missing out on a podium finish but scoring some decent points for the Supercheap Auto Racing Team.

Sunday

Sunday’s qualifying session for race 15 saw Chaz making a top 10 entry (qualifying 7th) which allowed him to compete in the top ten shootout, however, did not manage to gain any positions, meaning he started the Race 15th in 7th position.

Race 15 saw a lot of action from right off the start line and lasted pretty much throughout the race. A number of safety cars were called, and one within the last 10 laps which saw strategy between teams as the come out as tyre grip ran low. James Courtney was the standout for the race and managed to gain a number of positions in the final few laps finishing up in 2nd place. Chaz ended up finishing in 16th place.

Shane van Gisbergen finished up in 1st place and put on a show for the spectators drifting nearly a full lap of the track to finish up!
